Answer #1

In this case Intuit, the maker of turbo tax filing software is going for horizontal expansion in business. By doing this it will benefit from economies of scale in its business by widening its operations and also savings cost as it can duplicate the software used for federal tax filing and using the same basic procedure and software with relevant modifications for state tax filings.

It will save costs of building a new process for state tax filing as it already has the structure, expertise and procedure for federal tax filings and it can use the same knowledge for widening its line of products.

It can also save cost through the concept of economies of scope by using the same channel in place for advertising and marketing of its federal tax filing for state tax filing and again increase the relevant user base with time to target relevant state tax filing customers.

Also horizontal expansion will help the company increase its consumer base, market share and sales by catering to needs to additional customers who require state tax filing instead of just federal tax filings.
