Answer #1

Part A)

[NaBrO] = [BrO-] = 7 x 10^-2 M = 0.07 M

BrO- + H2O <==> HBrO + OH-

let x amount hyrolyzed

Kb = [HBrO][OH-]/[BrO-]

1 x 10^-14/2.0 x 10^-9 = x^2/0.07

x = [OH-] = 5.92 x 10^-4 M

Part B)

[H+] = 1 x 10^-14/5.92 x 10^-4 = 1.7 x 10^-11 M

pH = -log[H+] = 10.77

Part C)

[NaHS] = [HS-] = 8.3 x 10^-2 M = 0.083 M

HS- + H2O <==> H2S + OH-

let x amount hyrolyzed

Kb = [H2S][OH-]/[HS-]

1 x 10^-14/1.0 x 10^-7 = x^2/0.083

x = [OH-] = 9.11 x 10^-5 M

Part D)

[H+] = 1 x 10^-14/9.11 x 10^-5 = 1.1 x 10^-10 M

pH = -log[H+] = 9.96

Part E)

total [NO2-] = 0.13 + 2 x 0.23 = 0.59 M

NO2- + H2O <==> HNO2 + OH-

let x amount hyrolyzed

Kb = [HNO2][OH-]/[NO2-]

1 x 10^-14/4.0 x 10^-4 = x^2/0.59

x = [OH-] = 3.84 x 10^-6 M

Part F)

[H+] = 1 x 10^-14/3.84 x 10^-6 = 2.60 x 10^-9 M

pH = -log[H+] = 8.60
