Concepts and reason

A chemical reaction in which the functional group or atom of the molecule can be displaced by another atom or functional group is called a substitution reaction.  The electron-rich nucleophile reacts with the electron-deficient electrophile and replaces the leaving group (electronegative group), which is called a nucleophilic substitution reaction. SN1 and SN2 are the two types of nucleophilic substitution reaction.

Fundamentals

SN2 reaction:

It is a bimolecular reaction in which the breaking and making of bond is undergone in a single step. The nucleophile attacks from the backside of the electrophilic carbon and forms a bond between carbon and nucleophile, at the same time the bond between carbon and leaving group breaks and displaced.

According to the stereochemistry of SN2 reaction, the inverse of configuration is observed.
