Oxygen Therapy Hand-in Assignment
1. Define the term oxygen saturation. (1 Mark)
2. List two causes that can contribute to a low O2 sat reading. (2 Marks)
3. Define the term "continuous oxygen therapy and explain why it is beneficial for people with chronic breathing difficulties. (2 Marks)
4. Why is humidity added to the oxygen source before it is breathed by the client? (1 Mark)
1. Oxygen saturation is the indicator of how well the body distribute oxygen to the cells in different part of the body.
Oxygen saturation is the fraction of oxyhemoglobin (saturated hemoglobin with oxygen or oxygen bounded hemoglobin) in relation to the total hemoglobin (sum of both saturated and unsaturated hemoglobin) .
2. Causes of low oxygen saturation reading.
3. Continuous oxygen therapy is the therapeutic administration of supplemental oxygen in a concentration higher than room air without interruption to prevent or treat hypoxia.
People with chronic breathing difficulties will have decrease oxygen levels in the blood which can cause hypoxia and serious effects in the body. Breathing difficulty and hypoxia will affect sleeping pattern( sleep apnea), fatigue ( due to air hunger)mental alterations like confusion (due to brain hypoxia) and cardiac failure(due to cardiac overload). Continuous supply of oxygen can decrease the difficulty in breathing and improve and maintain a steady optimum oxygen saturation in blood will leads to decrease the hypoxia and its effects. It improves the quality of life and improve survival rate in people with chronic breathing problems.
4. Oxygen is a dry gas. It is humidified with distilled water to prevent the drying effect of the inner mucosal lining of upper airway and prevent soreness.
Ans 1. Oxygen saturation- defines as how much percentage of hemoglobin bind with oxygen, which present in peripheral tissue.
Ans 2. Causes of low oxygen saturation- Anemia ( percentage of haemoglobin is decrease), carbon monoxide poisoning ( CO bind to haemoglobin more tight than oxygen)
Ans 3. Continuous oxygen therapy- defines as administer of high concentration of oxygen, than oxygen level present at room air.
It's use in reliving hypoxia in COPD and respiratory failure condition.
Ans 4. Our nasal passage also add humidity to make air for breathing completable, so with adding humidity we make oxygen more completable for breathing.
