The patterns which control a portion of the world, are themselves fairly simple. But when they interact, they create slightly different overall configurations at every place. This happens because no two places on earth are perfectly alike in their conditions. And each small difference, itself contributes to the difference in conditions which the other patterns face.

When patterns interact, they result in overall configurations that may be substantially different (Alexander, 1979). The patterns which control a portion of the world, are themselves fairly simple. The key is the interactions between the patterns and the differences in the contexts in which they exist.

From reading educator-authors' revisions, and experiencing confusion myself surrounding how performance measures fit into a design case, I feel the problem arises from how new authors view design cases in relation to scientific experimental studies in education. A designer who is also a researcher must recognize the difference in perspective between a design case and an experimental study which uses a design for teaching and learning.

There is much confusion surrounding how performance measures fit into a design case. In some cases, this can be explained by confusion about what a design case is really all about. However, the ways that an author is used to writing may also have something to do with it.

What, however, does not merge in this autobiographical text are the ego boundaries of mother and daughter, mother and granddaughter. They always stand apart but close, always in relation to each other, always in a mental and spiritual proximity, but as presented by the text, never threatening each other's subjectivity. In this way, this textual representation of female and, in particular, maternal subjectivity rewrites--or rather, writes herself out of--the patriarchal inscription of the maternal: there is no fusion between the mother and the child; as is the self-sacrificial element of mothering missing from the text.

From the personal to the political: Toward a new theory of maternal narrative (pp. 170-182). Cranbury, NJ: Susquehanna University Press.

The patriarchal perspective of the maternal, particularly, the mother as a self-sacrificing individual whose identity fuses with that of the child, contrasts with the mother-child relationships in the text. The mother-daughter ego boundaries never merge in this autobiographical text.
