Answer #1

Refractive index of air = n1 = 1.000

Refractive index of diamond = n2 = 2.419

Refractive index of zircon = n3 = 1.923

Critical angle for light going from diamond to air = c1

c1 = 24.42o

Critical angle for light going from zircon to air = c2

c2 = 31.33o

a) Critical angle for light going from diamond to air = 24.42o

b) Critical angle for light going from zircon to air = 31.33o

    15 Diamond has an index of refraction of 2.42, and part of the reason diamonds sparkle is that this encourages a light ray to undergo many total internal reflections before it emerges. (a) Cal culate the critical angle at which total internal reflection occurs in diamond. (b) Explain the interpretation of your result: Is it mea- sured from the normal, or from the surface? Is it a minimum angle for total internal reflection, or is it a maximum? How would...

    A beam of white light is incident on the surface of a diamond at an angle θa. (Figure 1) Since the index of refraction depends on the light's wavelength, the different colors that comprise white light will spread out as they pass through the diamond. For example, the indices of refraction in diamond are nred=2.410 for red light and nblue=2.450 for blue light. Thus, blue light and red light are refracted at different angles inside the diamond, as shown in...
