A 7.50kg shell at rest explodes into two fragments, one with a mass of 1.00kg and the other with a mass of 6.50kg .

Answer #1

1/2*m*v^2 = 120 for heavier one

1/2*6.5*v^2 = 120

:. v = 6.08 m/s

as initially it was at rest, so momentum was and it should be zero after it explodes also.

:. m1*v1 = m2*v2

6.5*6.08 = 1*v2

:. v2 = 39.52 m/s ( note that this velocity is in opposite direction to that of 6.50 kg mass)

kinetic energy = 1/2*m*v^2

= 1/2*1*39.52^2

= 780.92 J
