Question

Solve the following problems. The required atomic masses can be found in the book Concepts of Modern Physics by Arthur Beiser. Q1: Suppose you begin with 1.0 × 10-2g of a pure radioactive substance and 4 h later determine that 0.25%(10-2g remains. What is the half-life of the substance?

Answer #1

According to the radioactive decay law, the number of atoms after time t is
     -0.693 N(t)=Noe ri /2
As the mass of the substance is proportional to the number of atoms, so, in terms of the mass, the radioactive decay law is
     -0.693 M(t) = Moe T1 / 2

where, au_{1/2} is the half life of the radioactive substance. So, we get

T1/2 M(t)
  0.693 × t In Mo
Now given
     Mo-1.0 × 10-2 g

M(t) 0.25 × 10-2 g
   t=4h
So, we get
   0.693 × 4 na-in(B)
  0.693 × 4 T/2 In 4
  T1/2 = 2 h

    10. Write a one-page summary of the attached paper? INTRODUCTION Many problems can develop in activated sludge operation that adversely affect effluent quality with origins in the engineering, hydraulic and microbiological components of the process. The real "heart" of the activated sludge system is the development and maintenance of a mixed microbial culture (activated sludge) that treats wastewater and which can be managed. One definition of a wastewater treatment plant operator is a "bug farmer", one who controls the aeration...
