Question

NAME DATE LAB PARTNER . EXPERIMENT 7 뎐 OBJECT The object of this experiment is to deterimine the specific heats of two differert metals by calorimetry method of mixtures. Calorimeter, steam generator (boiler) and tripod stand, Bunsen burner and lighter, triple beam balance, two 0-100 °C thermometers, unknown metal no. 1, unknown metal no. 2, stand with horizontal rod. DIAGRAM . Add water to the boiler until it is approximately two thirds full. Place it on the tripod. Place the Bunsen burner under it; carefully light it, and bring the water to the boiling point. Weigh and record sample metal no. 1. Tie it to a piece of string or thread, hang it from the horizontal rod on the stand. Lower it into the boiling water The metal must be completely submerged, but it must not touch-the bottom or sides of the boiler. 2. 3. Weigh and record the empty calorimeter inner cup and stirrer. 4. Record specific heat of the calorimeter and stirrer. Add cold water to the calorimeter inner cup until it is about one half to two thirds full. Weigh and record the cup with water and stirrer. Place the calorimeter inner cup with water and stirret in the outer vessel of the calorimeter and replace the insulating cover. Place in the thermometer so 6.
of the that it extends into the water. Measure and record the temperature 7. Measure and r 8. Quickl 9. Gentl water. also the initial not to splash the water record the temperature of the boiling water in the boiler. This is y transfer the unknown metal from the boiler to the calorimeter. Try y stir the water until the temperature increase stops (temperature temperature of the metal. ecomes constant), and record this equilibrium temperature. 10. Repeat Procedures 2,4-9 for unknown metal no. 2. 11. After you have obtaíned the value for the specific heat, check the table in order to determine which metals you have. Check results with instructor or laboratory technician.
1. Does the percent error represent good or bad results? Explain. 2. Where in your experimental set up do you expect to find the causes of error?

Calorimetry Materials: Styrofoam cup & lid Digital thermometer Metal sample Graduated cylinder Beaker Test tube with stopper Heating setup for beaker Behind a calorimetry experiment is the known occurrence of heat flow from a warm object to a cooler object. Heat scales with the amount of matter and also depends on the resistance of an object to change temperature. Temperature is just the average of the amount of energy contained inside a given area. Heat is represented by the letter...

E AFTER COMPLETING LAB. ANSWER IN SPACE PROVIDED. Suppose the heat of neutralization had been determined using a glass beaker instead of a polystyrene coffee cup How would the measured value have been affected? The heat of combustion of octane, C,H,. can be measured in a way similar to the method youC used to measure the heat of neutralization. The bomb calorimeter is used instead of a coffee cup. The reaction is 2C,H,1)+ 25 O, (g) 16 CO, (g) +...
