Why are hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen and oxygen the most important building blocks to living organisms? i.e. functional groups and how they're found in four categories of biological molecules.

● carbon- Carbon forms about 18% of the human body. Carbon is integral because of its unique ability to form four different bonds with other elements.

● hydrogen -  They provide the structure and shape necessary for proteins and DNA within cells so that they function properly. Hydrogen bonds also give water its unique properties, which are necessary for life.

● nitrogen -  Nitrogen is essential for all living things because it is a major part of amino acids, which are the building blocks of proteins and of nucleic acids such as DNA, which transfers genetic information to subsequent generations of organisms. ... A process called the nitrogen cycle makes this happen.

● Oxygen -  Oxygen is a basic requirement for most organisms, although there are some microorganisms that can grow in (or even require) environments without oxygen, while others can tolerate very low levels. Organisms that spend their entire life in water ‘breathe’ oxygen dissolved in the water.

thats why these are important building block of living organism.
