a) There are many activities that create income but not increase "well being".
As a measure of the economic activity we engage in many different things like extraction of minerals, constructing building or making dams. All these activities might be important for increasing the income but it harms the environment like cutting down trees to make a highway. Anything which harms the environment hurts our overall well being. More cars and Aero planes might generate huge income for the economy but it harms the environment and overall well being. GDP doesn't measure the loss done to the environmental factors.
b) GDP is the only thing we got.
GDP is standardised. If we are causing harm to the overall well being it is calculated in indirect manners. Like an increase in the pollution level due to cutting of trees will increase pollution and that will decrease the overall productivity in the market by making people sick. Other measures which we have to measure our progress doesn't take any of this into account. GDP is standardised and used by the whole world. That is why it is the only option we have.
