Nita and her clinical team meet to discuss how to support the clinic's many clients who are using assisted technologies to start a family. They see a range of situations. Some couples are eligible for treatment under the provincial health care plan. Other couples go to private clinics in Canada and abroad. Nita knows that some women only have access to the technology because they donate their eggs to the clinic. After fertilization, the eggs that will not be transferred into the woman's uterus are donated. Some clients at the clinic are recipients of these donated eggs. Insemination of anonymous and known sperm, therapeutic donor insemination (TDI), is also available. TDI is the oldest form of assisted reproduction available.

Ritu, one of Nita's team members, says at the meeting that she thinks the consequences of using these methods are significant. “Some of these children will not know who their mother or father is. Finding out who anonymously donated sperm or an egg is impossible, and this is not fair to these children. Adopted children at least have an option of finding their birth parents. It is difficult to not be able to have children naturally, but life is not always fair. These single women, same-sex couples, and straight couples should not have access to these technologies that are undermining what it means to be a family.”
