Some researchers claim that herbal supplements such as ginseng or ginkgo biloba enhance human memory. To test this claim, a researcher selects a sample of n = 20 college students. Each student is given a ginkgo biloba supplement daily for six weeks and then all the participants are given a standardized memory test. For the population, scores on the test are normally distributed with μ = 75 and σ = 15. The sample of n = 20 students had a mean score of M = 85.

Can the researcher conclude that scores on the memory test are significantly different after taking the supplement? Use a two-tailed test with α = .05. Be sure to state your null hypothesis, a decision about that null hypothesis, and a conclusion explaining your results with an APA format statement. Calculate Cohen’s d if necessary.

Answer #1

TWO TAILED TEST

The hypotheses are

Ho:μ=75

Ha:mu eq75

Rejection region:

Reject Ho if Z > Z0.025=1.96

Test statistics:

M_μ 85-75 2.98 15 7t 20

P value :

P value associated with Z statistic here calculated either using Z table or by Calculator as

0.0029

Conclusion:

Since Z> Z(0.025) and P-value is less than the level of significance(0.05), hence we reject the null hypothesis and conclude that at 0.05 level of significance we have enough evidence to support the claim.

    A) Some researchers claim that herbal supplements such as ginseng or ginkgo biloba enhance human memory. To test this claim, a researcher selects a sample of twenty five college students. Each student is given a ginkgo biloba supplement daily for six weeks and then all the participants are given a standardized memory test. The standardized memory test scores are normally distributed with a mean of 70 and a standard deviation of 15. The sample of twenty five students demonstrated a...

I need help on question #4 Q1. Although there is a popular belief that herbal remedies such as Ginkgo biloba and Ginseng may improve learning and memory in healthy adults, these effects are usually not supported by well-controlled research. In a typical study, a researcher obtains a sample of n 36 participants and has each person take the herbal supplements every day for 90 days. At the end of the 90 days, each person takes a standardized memory test. This...

In a series of tests to study the efficacy of ginkgo biloba on memory, Solomon et al. first looked at differences in memory tests of people six weeks before and after joining the study ["Ginkgo for Memory Enhancement: A Randomized Controlled Trial", 2002]. For 99 patients receiving no medication, the average increase in category fluency (number of words generated in one minute) was 1.07 words with a standard deviation of 3.195 words. Researchers wanted to know whether the mean number...

We know that, in the population, the average memory span (number of items a person can recall) is 7, with a standard deviation of 2. We want to know if the herb gingko biloba can really enhance a person’s memory. We get a sample of 25 students and have them take the herb for one month and then test their memory span. What null hypothesis would we test? What is the alternative hypothesis? We know that, in the population, the...
