Answer #1

Precipitate will not form when Q < Ksp
ksp [ Fe ( OH )3 ] = 2.5 x 10–20

[ Fe3+ ] = 10–3 M

PH = 2

POH = 14 —2 = 12

[ OH ] = 10–12 M

Q = [ Fe3+ ] [ OH]3 = ( 10-3 ) x 10-36 = 10–39

since Q < Ksp precipitate will not form

    2. A water sample is taken from a stream in Nevada receiving acid mine drainage. The stream passes through an area containing gypsum CaSO4. Laboratory analysis shows that the pH of the water is 4, the total concentration of sulfate (SO42-) is 6 x 10-M, and the total concentration of chloride (C1) is 3 x 10-4M. a) Assuming that the only other ionic species present is calcium (Ca?), what is the calcium concentration in the water?

    (10 pts) The graph below shows solubility vs. pH for five solids (where solubility in M is the same as the dissolved metal cations). These solids are hydroxides of chromium (Cr), aluminum (Al), nickel (Ni), and iron (Fe in II and III oxidation states; often referred to as ferrous and ferric iron). Use this graph to answer parts a-c below. a) Which solid is among the least soluble at pH 12 and among the most soluble at pH 6? b)...
