Generally, chief rays (CR) are those rays which intercepts the optical axis of the lens but in the present case we are not dealing with t a single lens but with a lens system so here, CR can be explained as those rays which passes through the center of the aperture stop. On the other hand marginal rays (MR) are defined as those rays which passes through the center of the object at maximum aperture.

The object will be located at the left before the focal point F1. As understood from the figure both the lenses are making real images so the object must be placed on the left side of the system. Here, in the figure O indicates the object location
