Generally, chief rays (CR) are those rays which intercepts the optical axis of the lens but in the present case we are not dealing with t a single lens but with a lens system so here, CR can be explained as those rays which passes through the center of the aperture stop. On the other hand marginal rays (MR) are defined as those rays which passes through the center of the object at maximum aperture.
