Answer #1

10.a) The subscript in the empirical formula should be a whole number. In the given formula, 2.67 which is subscript of H is not a whole number.

b) to make 2.67 which is the subscript of H, we will multiply it by 3, so wewill get 8.01 which can be approximated as 8. Hence, the correct empirical formula is C3H8

11. a) We can check if a compound is in anhydrous or hydrated form by heating it.

  b) If it is hydrate then on heating MgSO4, the water of crystallisation will get evaporated and this leads to change in colour.

c) if it is the anhydrous crystals then heating will cause no colour change in it.

CHM 010 On-Line Lab, Formula of a Hydrate PURPOSE: To determine the formula of Cuso..x H20. In other words, to determine the value of "X". PROCEDURE: When copper(II) sulfate x hydrate, a blue crystalline solid containing embedded water molecules (called a hydrate), is heated in air, it loses the water molecules and the blue solid is transformed to a white anhydrous (no water) crystal known as anhydrous copper(II) sulfate. The "x" represents a whole number of water molecules attached to...

When determining the empirical formula experimentally, you will not know the number of moles directly since we do not have instrumentation that can measure the quantity of moles. Instead the mass can be used. In an experiment it is found that an aluminum oxide sample contains 1.35 g of aluminum and 1.20 g of oxygen. a. How many moles of aluminum...
