* Straight stick blood draw procedure.

      * It is a method of collecting blood samples for investigation of health status of a patient.

      * Articles needed include

                            * Syringes 5ml,10ml.

                            * Tourniquet.

                            * Small makintosh.

                            * Number 20gauge needle or vacutainer assembly.

                            * Alcohol swabs.

                           * Disposible gloves.

                           * Specimen container test tube or bottle.

                           * Laboratory requisition form.

                           * Sterile gloves pads.

                           * Adhesive tapes.

   * Procedure.

                 Pre - procedure.

                          * Check physicians order and identify patient to make sure

                             blood will collected from right patient.

                          * Expain the procedure to the patient.

                          * Proper handwashing and put on gloves to avoid possible exposure

                           to blood.

                          * Examine and select the vein for blood collection which include anticubital

                             area,wrist,dorsum of the hand and top of foot and palpate the vein.

                          * Instruct the patient to extend and hold arm straight at the elbow with fist

                             clenched to reduce risk of injury.

                          * Application of tourniquet 5 to 15 cm above the selected site with a sufficient

                             pressure to obstruct the blood flow.

                 During procedure.

                        * Clean the area with a alcohol swab from center to pheriphery in a circular moton

                           to reduce the number of micobes then allow it to dry.

                        * Place thumb above the chosen vein and draw skin taut immediately below the site

                          before inserting needle to stabilize the vein.

                        * Place the syringe between the thumb and last three fingers with the bevel up and

                          directly in in line with the course of the vein the insert needle quickly and smoothly

                          through skin into the vein.

                       * Take blood sample by gently pulling back on the plunger of the syringe.

                       * Release the syringe after specimen taken and ask the patient to open the fist.

                       * Apply sterile gauze piece to the puncture site without applying pressure and withdraw

                         needle slowly along the line of vein.

                       * Instruct patient to apply gentle and firm pressure to site for 2 to 3 minutes to prevent

                         leakage of blood.

           Post procedure.

                      * Remove the needle from the syringe after withdrawing blood then gently eject blood

                         sample into appropriate container without forming bubbles in the test tube.

                     * Invert the tube gently few times to mix blood with anticoagulant where applicable.

                     * Dispose needle and syringe in appropriate containers to avoid possible spread of blood

                        borne diseases.

                    * Clean all spills with 10% sodium hypochlorite solution to reduce risk of blood borne disease.

                    * Replace the articles used for procedure.

                    * Record the procedure and name of test for which sample send to laboratory.
