At 1930 hrs you check vital signs for Mrs Norris an 83 year old woman who is posted for surgery tomorrow. On observation the blood pressure is 92/ 60 and heart rate is 98/min. She also complains of mild dizziness and wants to lie down. She is prescribed Amlodipine 5 mg per oral at 2000hrs.

Answer :

  • As health care provider ,we need to assess the patient accurately whether it is true dizziness or not .
  • Nurse should provide comfortable position to the patient to prevent the patient from falls .
  • Instruct the client to sit down or liedown and advice to rest until the patient normal .
  • Patient should not pass out from the bed ,because there may be chances to fall over from loss of balance
  • Advice the patient put the hand rails when he want to walk .
  • Instruct the patient to use walker for stability .
  • If the patient BP is very low ,discuss with the consult doctors and follow his orders .
  • Administer the fluid and electrolytes as per physician order.
  • If the patient is not in NBM ,advice the patient to take plenty of oral fluids and advice to eat salt containing food ,because salt contains sodium it will increase the blood pressure

Common side effects of amlodipine :

  • Dizziness
  • Head ache .
  • Light headed ness.
  • Swelling of ankles.
  • Drowsiness.
  • Nausea and vomiting .
