- Self responsibility is based on the understanding that the individual controls his/her life

- Each person alone must make the choices that determine the health of his/her lifestyle

- Various techniques have been used to encourage people to accept responsibility for their health, including public health announcements, educational programs, and reward systems (e.g., insurance incentives)

- Health promotion programs are important tools for encouraging people to assume responsibility for their health and develop behaviors that improve health.

- Some clinicians believe that a healthy diet is one that substitutes "natural" foods for processed and refined foods, consequently decreasing the intake of sugar, salt, fat, cholesterol, caffeine etc.

3. Health promotion: four components: stress reduction and management.

- Research has suggested that negative effects of stress on health included a cause-and-affect relationship between stress and other factors such as infections, disease, traumatic injuries (motor vehicle accidents) and some chronic illnesses
