PartI-Van de Graff Generator Demonstration: In this part of the experiment, the TA will require a few student demonstrators to perform the activity below before the class answers the questions that follow. The student volunteer must stand on the rubber mat next to the Van de Graff generator and place your hand on top of the generator. Have another volunteer turn the generator on. While the generator is charging, shake your head. 1. What do you observe? 2. What do you feel? 3. Can you explain what occurs?Discharge the generator by touching the dome with the conducting sphere and place one of the small Styrofoam spheres on top of the dome. Turn the generator on and allow it to charge. Without touching the generator or the Styrofoam sphere, bring your hand close to the Styrofoam sphere. 4. What happens? 5. Explain why this happens. Place the conducting sphere in contact with the Van de Graff generator with your hand in contact with the conducting sphere. Turn the Van de Graff generator on and allow it to charge. Remove your hand from the conducting sphere and then turn the generator off. Bring the sphere close to some Styrofoam spheres or small pieces of paper and or other available light weight objects 6. What do you observe? What explanation can you give for this behavior? Discharge the generator using the discharge sphere. 7. 8. Place the conducting sphere close to the dome of the generator but not touching it and place your hand in contact with the opposite side of the conducting sphere. Turn the Van de Graff generator on and allow it to charge. Remove your hand from the sphere and then turn the generator off. Bring the sphere close to some Styrofoam spheres or small pieces of paper and any other available light weight objects 9. 1: As move your hand over the surface of a charged generator you will see little sparks of light zip over the surface between your hand making small cracking noise.

2: You will feel tinges of being exposed to electric charge and feel small zipping shocks in your hand as the surface discharges through you.

3: All this happens because when you put your hand over the surface of a charged van de Graff generator it discharges through your hand to the ground And as you move your hand over the surface the static charges lying on the surface try to clutch your hand to discharge to the ground.

4: If you use the Styrofoam sphere then the magnitude of shock experienced by you will increase, since the Styrofoam spheres are highly conducting.
