After world war II, young Tucker tried to break in the automobile business with his original "Tucker Torpedo" automobile.(You should see the movie"Tucker") But the Big three automobile makers(GM, FORD, and CHRYSLER) formed their own exclusive club, not allowing a new comer to join the club. With a plot(bully tactic, squeeze the capital, or tarnish Torpedo's credibility), they destroyed young Tucker's dream to be a major car maker. Suppose you are in the same position as Tucker's to break in the Oligopoly market(Big three ).
My question is, 30 years later, another young businessman, named Bill Gates first worked for IBM with his licensed operating system called MS-Dos program (although young Bill Gates originally bought Dos program from somebody else). Later he built his own empire called Microsoft. Despite of the difference of the initial sunk cost between a car industry and a software industry, please compare Tucker with Gates in terms of their business strategy
Will be greatly appreciated if it answered in 5sentences
Microsoft was initially formed in 1945. Bill gates and Paul
Allen converted BASIC for using on earlier personal computers. IBM
in 1980 then approached bill gates to make an operating software
for its PC and signed an agreement. Bill Gates purchased an OS from
another company and named it MS-DOS. Microsoft by 1985 made windows
1.0 which was compatible and could also support MS-DOS. It sold the
software in the market by itself and also through IBM and by 1990
had the biggest market share defeating rival OS such as CP/M.
The one difference that was between Microsoft and Tucker was
publicity. While Tucker's public image was negatively affected due
to fraud allegations put on it, Microsoft had a good public image.
The era of fast working computers was yet to come, PC which would
work swiftly. Tuckers ideas were not really working to make cars
which adversely affected the company and its innovation. Microsoft
was swift at producing windows and buying DOS.
Bill gates certainly had a strategy to operate his business while
Tucker could not operate well and failed. Also the pressure from
the big 3 could not get Tucker ahead from his actions. Bill Gates
also sold his software outside of IBM which was one of the main
reasons for its success. Also windows is really compatible to use.
Tucker cars had loud noises and the negative publicity that Tucker
cars don't go back made it a lot more difficult for it to survive
in the market.
