A 19-year-old male college student was admitted with a high fever, stiff neck, chest pain, cough and nausea. A lumbar puncture was performed, and results were positive for meningitis. Chest x-ray revealed pneumonia. Sputum cultures grew pneumococcus. The patient was treated with IV antibiotics and was discharged with the diagnosis of pneumococcal meningitis and pneumococcal pneumonia.
