3. a) Should a person who gives a placebo to a patient know that it is a placebo?

A study which is placebo controlled is most effective when it is double blinded, hence the person who gives placebo should not know about that.

3. b) In a double-blind study, the treatment group improves significantly more than the control group, can we conclude that the treatment is effective?

Yes, we can conclude that the treatment is effective when the treatment group improves significantly, as there is less possibility for biased findings in double blinded placebo controlled study.

4. Answer: c) Without a control group, we cannot be sure that the improvement was due to the medication.

In this scenario, there might be an improvement in patient's condition relevant to each doses of medication, but to conclude the drug as effective there must be a control group.

Is injecting medical cement effective in reducing pain for people who have suffered fractured vertebrae? A paper describes an experiment to compare patients who underwent vertebroplasty (the injection of cement) to patients in a placebo group who underwent a fake procedure in which no cement was actually injected. Because the placebo procedure was similar to the vertebroplasty procedure except for the actual injection of cement, patients participating in the experiment were not aware of which treatment they received. All patients...

A multicenter double-blind randomized study was carried out to compare the effect of drug X with that of a placebo in patients surviving acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Treatment with the drug started 7 days after infarction in 1,884 patients, 52% of all persons who were evaluated for entry into the study. 945 participants were randomized to treatment with drug X while 939 were assigned to the placebo group. Patients were then followed for 12 months for reinfarction. There were 152...

In a research study, a group of medical researchers tested whether Botox can be used to reduce shoulder pain. A total of 43 patients suffering from shoulder pain participated in the study. A researcher randomly assigned 21 of the patients to receive a Botox injection. The other 22 patients received an injection of saline (salt water). None of the patients knew the type of injection they received. One month later, patients were asked if they had a significant reduction in...

    2) In a different study, patients were divided randomly into two groups. One group received a well-known migraine headache medication called Maxalt, while another group received nothing. On average, there was a 40% decrease in pain levels after 2 hours for the group receiving Maxalt. The group who received nothing had a 15% decrease in pain. Part A: The patients were divided randomly, so the groups should be roughly similar. Unfortunately, there is still a confounding variable in this study....

q27 A research team is studying a new pain medication for patients suffering from fibromyalgia. Patients suffering from chronic pain as a result of fibromyalgia were divided into two categories: Treatment and Placebo. Patients in the treatment group were injected with the new drug while patients in the placebo group were injected with saline solution. Neither the patients, nor the health care practitioners admininstering the study knew who was receiving the actual drug. After two weeks the patients were asked...

What can we conclude about the effectiveness of the drug if 62 of those actually taking the drug felt a beneficial effect, while 41 of the patients taking the placebo felt a beneficial effect? A)...
