Meiosis is the process through which gametes are produced in each and every organism. Meiotic division is said to be a reduction division whereby the number of chromosomes would be reduced exactly to half of its number. In humans the number of chromosomes is 46 and after meiotic division the gamete formed would have only 23 chromosomes.
In meiosis during prophase crossing-over happens between the sister chromatids when they are aligned along the equatorial plane.
