Answer #1

Solution:

According to Le Chatelier's principle:

Increase the concentration of reactant shifted equilibrium towards forward direction and vice versa.

Increase in concentration of products shifted equilibrium towards backward direction and vice versa.

1) Chromate -Dichromate

2CrO4- + 2H+ = Cr2O7^2- + H2O

A) Addition of H2SO4: Addition of H2SO4, shifted ewuilibrium to forward direction because it increases H+ concentration in reactant side. Hence, according to Le Chateliers principle, increase in concentration of reactant produces more products.

Thus, color of solution intensify from yellow to orange.

B) Addition of NaOH:

Addition of NaOH, decreases the H+ concentration, hence reaction shifted backward direction. Thus, solution becomes lighter from orange to yellow or colorless.

2) Acetic acid - Acetate solution.

CH3COOH + H2O = CH3COO- + H3O+

Addition of CH3COONa:

Addition of sodium acetate increases the concentration of CH3COO- , hence according to Le-chateliers principle equilibrium shifted backward direction. Hence, color of solution becomes lighter from pink to yellow.

The same trend applies in the other equilibrium.
