b) both metal oxides do not decompose on heating. Only the metal oxide in tube 1 decomposed as indicated by the release of oxygen. The release of oxygen is further proved by by the splinter test. The glowing splint burning with steady flame indicates the presence of oxygen.

c) Based on these observations it can be concluded that metal oxides in tube 2 is more stable than that in tube 1 since metal oxides in tube 1 decomposed and released oxygen on heating while in tube 2 it remained stable.

The general decomposition reaction of metal oxides is

2MO-------> 2M+ Oxygen
