PENICILLIN : it is the antimicrobial agent which belongs to class of beta lactams antibiotics
Source: penicillium mould fungi
Target microbes: streptococcus , staphylococcus , clostridium, listeria , Neisseria, treponema , leptospira , bacillus anthracis etc.
Mechanism of action: penicillin is a bactericidal antimicrobial. it kills the bacteria by inhibiting the enzyme transpeptidase. as a result of which it inhibits the cell wall synthesis of the bacteria. the crosslinking of peptidoglycan is prevented which makes cell wall weak . this cause cell wall to break down easily.
Side effects: headache, nausea, vomiting, black discoloration of tongue, urticaria, diarrhoea, stomach pain, allergic reaction etc.
Treatment regimen: penicillin G procaine doses in adults:
streptococcal infection: 600,000-1,000,000 units im qDay for atleast 10 days
staphylococcal infection: 600,000-1,000,000 units im qDay
bacterial endocarditis: 600,000-1,000,000 units im qDay
syphilis : primary , secondary , latent : 600,000 units im qDay for 8 days
