Answer #1

PENICILLIN : it is the antimicrobial agent which belongs to class of beta lactams antibiotics

Source: penicillium mould fungi

Target microbes: streptococcus , staphylococcus , clostridium, listeria , Neisseria, treponema , leptospira , bacillus anthracis etc.

Mechanism of action: penicillin is a bactericidal antimicrobial. it kills the bacteria by inhibiting the enzyme transpeptidase. as a result of which it inhibits the cell wall synthesis of the bacteria. the crosslinking of peptidoglycan is prevented which makes cell wall weak . this cause cell wall to break down easily.

Side effects: headache, nausea, vomiting, black discoloration of tongue, urticaria, diarrhoea, stomach pain, allergic reaction etc.

Treatment regimen: penicillin G procaine doses in adults:

streptococcal infection: 600,000-1,000,000 units im qDay for atleast 10 days

staphylococcal infection: 600,000-1,000,000 units im qDay

bacterial endocarditis: 600,000-1,000,000 units im qDay

syphilis : primary , secondary , latent : 600,000 units im qDay for 8 days
