A national patient identifier was initially proposed in HIPAA but didn’t get implemented. Why don’t we have a national patient identifier? Would a national patient identifier be helpful? Why or why not? Why aren’t we using social security numbers? As an HIM Professional, what is your take on this and what do you think should be done?

Answer #1

National patient identifier was proposed by HIPAA in 1996.On the grounds of "security" breach or as a privacy concern this was refused to be funded by the Congress for its implementation. This can be helpful because data can be accessed in a easier and faster way between healthcare sectors, cost effective. This is only possible when there is adequate security system initiated for this implementation and this preventing cyber hacking of the patient data.

As a HIM professional, thinking on the grounds of future which is going to be mostly and completely technology oriented , the privacy concern can be handled efficiently by developing a strong security system and this implementing the national patient identifier.
