The floor system of a gymnasium consists of a 130-mm-thick concrete slab resting on four steel beams (A=9,100 mm2) that, in turn, are supported by twosteel girders (A=25,600 mm2).Determine the live loads acting on beam BF and girder AD.

*Note: Before solving this problem check if this slab is one-way or two-way system, and if it is a two-way system then solve accordingly*

Answer #1

The ratio of l(y)/l(x) = 24/10 = 2.4 >2.0 which implies the slab is ONE WAY. (live + beams+girder loads will be carried by Girders Ad and EH)

Live load for Gymanasiums is 4.79 kN/sq.m.

Live load on beams BF &CG is a line load and comes from 4m on either side of the beams (i.etotal tributary width = 8m)

LL(BF &CG) =

Live load on beams AE &DH is a line load comes from 4m on one side of the beams (i.e totaltributary width = 4m)

LL (AE &DH) = 0.5*LL(BF &CG) = 0.5*38.32 =

Live load on Girders AD &EH is a set of concentrated loads at location of (A, B, c &D for girder AD) and (E,F,G &H ofr girder EH)

Concentrated loads at A, D, E &H =

Concentrated load at B,C, F &G =

Question .2 A structural system that supports a reading room is being considered for a new library. The floor consists of a 125 mm thick slab of normal density reinforced concrete supported by steel beams and columns. The steel beams weigh 90 kg/m while the steel columns weigh 150 kg/m. In addition to self weight, dead loads must include a 1.0 kPa allotment for partitions and a 0.5 kPa allotment for flooring/ceiling/services.
