The selected preventable health issue is "obesity".A person can be considered to be obese if they are more than 20 percent over their ideal weight. Obesity has been more precisely defined by the National Institutes of Health (the NIH) as a BMI of 30 or more. Overall barriers foreseen to programme implementation would be firstly, a non awareness or in some instances, a denial of the problem. This is because obesity by itself does not produce any noticeable symptoms except for in the severe stages. Secondly, obesity runs in families & the obese individual feels that he is normal, just as every other member of the family around him. Another important consideration is that a blunt approach of telling a person that they are fat could damage nurse to patient rapport & may cause psychological problems to develop in the patient. The problem is a psycho-social disorder & can be overcome with counselling & nutrition guidance. Obesity is a very easily preventable problem & the effective use of minimal resources required screening & counselling services, can help to promote productivity & improved quality of life several individuals.

Existing initiatives include the WHO Global Strategy on Diet, Physical Activity and Health. A good audience profile would divide audiences into different age groups such as Group 1 including ages between 16 to 29 & Group 2 considering ages 30 to 60. This grouping is done based on physical activity levels & daily routines/ preferences. Next these groups should be divided into subgroups based on their BMI as Obesity - BMI of 30-39.9 & severe or morbid obesity - BMI ≥40 kg/m. The audience analysis should include information about the levels of education of the participants (this will tell us the type of communication that is most effective, a poorly educated audience may not be able to read and understand printed matter), access to their general practitioner & if they have been told that they are a few pounds heavier than normal (this will tell us about their awareness & levels of commitment in staying healthy), a detailed diet charting outlining meals had every day for a week (gives us an idea of the approximate calorie intake), about how healthy they felt & how healthy they feel is their food and lifestyle (gives an idea of insight into the problem) & lastly how they would feel if they got to know that they were obese (this tells us about their psychological status & any negative impacts such communication may have on them). This provides us data that can be used to create meaningful health communication programmes. In addition, it is imperative that the new messages are strong enough to elicit lifestyle & behavioural changes designed but mustaalso be carefully pre-tested to ensure they do not have unintended negative impacts such as increased stigmatisation of vulnerable individuals and increased levels of body dissatisfaction and/or eating-disordered behaviours.
