Answer #1

The marginal gain from Van's second hour of work,from 9:00 A.M to 10:00 A.M is (140-80)= 60 problems.

The marginal gain from Van's fourth hour of work from 11:00 A.M to noon is (200-180)= 20 problems.

Given the above information , in order to use his 4 hours of study time to get the best exam score possible , he should spent 1 hour working on problems and 3 hours reading. Because in 1st hour he can solve 80 problems ,so he prefer to solve problems as 70 problems increase his exam score by the same amount as 1 hour reading. If he spend second hour of work in solving problems ,then he can solve only 60 problems in that hour And therefore ,it is beneficial to spend that hour in reading because this increases the exam score as same as increases by 70 problems solved.

And because after 1st hour , Marginal gain goes on decreasing. Therefore, he would spend only 1 hour on problems and 3 hours reading.

Hence, option(B) is correct.
