Toy car with m (mass) of 0.5kg moves at a v= 1.5m/s when it collides a spring. The spring is compressed 0.2m before toy car is brought to rest.

Q. What is the spring constant of spring?

- How does the energy flow diagram look like for this question? Could you please draw it if you can?

Answer #1

From conservation of energy ,

KE of car = spring potential energy

(1/2)mv2 = (1/2)kx2

0.5*1.52 = k*0.22

k = 28.12 N/m

spring constant of spring, k = 28.12 N/m

(b)

Energy will flow from toy car (KE ) to spring (PE).

Show them with arrows.

    Mass m = 0.1 kg moves to the right with speed v=0.64 m/s and collides with an equal mass initially at rest. After this inelastic collision the system retains a fraction = 0.82 of its original kinetic energy. What is the speed VR (in m/s) of the mass which was originally at rest before the collision? Hints: All motion is in 1D. Ignore friction between the masses and the horizontal surface. You will probably need to use the quadratic formula...

    2. A toy car has a mass of 0.400 kg. It gets thrown at 9.0 m/s toward a spring-held block with a mass of 1.1 kg. As a result of the impact, the car bounces backward from the block. It does not stick. The block compresses the spring by a maximum distance of 24 cm. After it bounces, the car is traveling 1/3 as fast as it was before it hit the block. It does not stick What is the...
