The main function of Federation of state medical boards (FSMB) is licensing and disciplinary functions to protect the health safety and welfare of the particular state. This functions are divided between two separate boards in some states. In many states there is a larger administrative or umbrella agency to supervise or control the board unless in few states where board is simply an advisory body. Both allopathic and osteopathic physicians are regulated by board and in other states separate boards exist. The boards determine a physician's initial and continuing qualification and fitness for the practice of medicine.
