The photoelectric effect is a phenomenon in which electrons are ejected from the clean surface of certain metals (alkali metals), when the metals are exposed to a light. For the emission of electrons from the metal, light of a minimum frequency, called the threshold frequency only will be effective.

For the emission of electron from the metal surface, every metal must possess minimum energy called as threshold energy.

If supplied energy < threshold energy, ejection of electrons will not takes place.

If supplied energy = threshold energy, ejection of electrons will takes place and the electrons will have no velocity.

If supplied energy > threshold energy, ejection of electrons will takes place and the electrons will have velocity.

The extra energy other than threshold energy will converted to velocity of the electrons.
