Answer #1

1. The normal boiling points of

(a) Diethyl ether = 34.5\degree C

(b) Ethanol = 78.5\degree C

(c) Water = 100\degree C

It is known from the graph of Figure 1. This is because the boiling occurs at atmospheric pressure which is 760 torr. Hence, temperature corresponding to 760 torr gives the boiling point for the respective liquids.

2. From the graph in Figure 1, a temperature constant line is dawn at 20\degree C. It can be obtained from there that ETHANOL has the highest vapour pressure at 20\degree C

3. In equation 1, the slope is :  -\frac{\Delta H_{vap}}{R}

4. Based on the second plot and my response to question3, it is clearly visible from the second plot that water has the greater slope than ethanol. Thus water has greater {\Delta H_{vap}} than ethanol.

    "Vapor Pressure of Water" assignment: VAPOR PRESSURE OF WATER INTRODUCTION All liquids exist in equilibrium with the vapor state. As temperature increases, this equilibrium shifts more and more in favor of the vapor until one reaches the boiling point, at which all liquid is converted to gas. The pressure exerted by the vapor over the liquid is known as its vapor pressure and is a function of temperature. Boiling occurs at the temperature at which the vapor pressure is equal...

    Binary mixture at vapor-liquid equilibrium at constant temperature has total pressure P=1.57 bar at x1=0.3. The vapor pressures of pure components are P1=2.06 bar and P2=1.13 bar, respectively. Assume that the vapor phase is ideal and the liquid phase non-ideality can be described by 1-parameter Margules equation . Calculate the total pressure and the vapor composition for this mixture at x1=0.6 at the same temperature

    Review Constants Pe Consider the following two substances and their vapor pressures at 298 K All liquids evaporate to a certain extent. The pressure exerted by the gas phase in equilibrium with the liquid is called vapor pressure. Prap. The vapor pressure of a particular substance is determined by the strength of the intermolecular forces. But for any given substance, the vapor pressure only changes with temperature. The Clausius-Clapeyron equation expresses the relationship between vapor pressure and temperature: Substance Vapor...
