Why should high school students be tested for drugs?
INTRODUCTION
School is a place where students gain an understanding of social skills, self confidence, trust, insight and realises the hidden talents in them. But,the scenario is entirely different as per reports which says about 16% of high school students are addicted to illicit drugs. If we consider adults, their drugs habits ,surprisingly, were started at high schools. Those who have tried it once will use it the second time and it continues year by year.Prevention programs like D.A.R.E. had been introduced but proved to be a failure.Instead, drug testing has come upon the path based on drug testing policies.
BODY
.Supreme Court has given the authority to schools for drug testing in 1995 and 2002.In 1995 it was declared legally and in 2002,it was elaborated on students joining the extracurricular activity. Drug testing should be done in high schools,as it decreases the illicit drug use or say no to drugs, especially those who are under peer pressure and or who are on the fence.More over, early measures can be taken for those who have started using drugs to move them out of addiction.Treatment can also be provided for those students who have drug problems. So prevention, intervention, counselling and treatment plan collaborate in drug testing.Drug testing conducted among sports team or club revealed less drug use compared to the students of schools without drug testing as per the reports of The National Centre For Education Evaluation.
CONCLUSION
Drug testing paved the path to change at least one student at a time from illicit drug use which can be considered as its success.Safety of children is a legitimate concern which will be possible through the testing of illicit use of drugs among high school students.Lets build up a drug free generation.
