Answer #1

Prospective cohort study starts in present from normal individuals. Some are exposed to disease-causing agent and some are not exposed. Follow-up of the participants is done to get the outcome of the exposure (disease developed or not). So this study goes from present to future.

Retrospective goes from present to past. Study has diseased participants. Study is conducted to look back the causes of disease. Who are exposed participants and who are non-exposed.

1. A cohort design that follows participants over a period of time until disease develops is called prospective study.

2. It is an example of retrospective study because the disease outcome (cancer patients has already died due to carcinogen) is already present.

3. Framingham study has a sample size of approx. 5000 people. This study is now studying third generation of participants. It studies role of cigarette smoking in heart disease.
