According to the reports of the CDC, during the 20th century, substantial achievements in the control of many vaccine-preventable diseases were made. There has been a decline in the complications and morbidity of nine vaccine-preventable diseases such as smallpox, along with the other eight diseases for which vaccines had been recommended for universal use in children as of 1990.
Four of these diseases: smallpox has been eradicated, poliomyelitis caused by wild-type viruses eliminated, and measles and Haemophilus influenza type b (Hib) invasive disease among children aged less than 5 years have been reduced to a record low numbers of cases. Thus the impact of vaccinization in the elimination and reduction of cases of infectious diseases has been tremendous, since the use of vaccines.
