An employee can tactfully, professionally and safely deliver upsetting news personally to a superior by focusing on the facts and by gathering all relevant information associated with the news. The upsetting news should be presented in a manner in which all facts and information – past as well as current – is laid out before the superior. Also the news should be presented in a patient manner and timing should be proper and news should be presented after gauging the reaction of the superior. The employee should also properly prepare and rehearse the presentation aspect before actually delivering the news.
The employee should focus on using buffer techniques. This will enable the employee to position the bad news in a strategic manner and use a passive voice when communicating. Also any positives should be highlighted as well. The idea should be to present the upsetting news in such a manner that the positives are accentuated while the negatives are communicated clearly as well.
