Answer #1

Mental health care has evolved quite differently than medical care to become the caring and effective profession it is today. The history of mental health in U.S serves as a good representation of the various ways in which trends in psychiatric care and cultural understanding of mental health have influenced national policies and mental health treatment standards.

The mental health care system in U.S is progressing and will evolve in the coming future .

In the past , many cultures viewed mental illness as religious punishment or procession . Many civilization categories mental illness as a personal issue with religious assertion. These civilization has confusion that treating mental illness as a religious issue or as a medical problem. In 18th century mentally ill people were stigmatized and were confined to unhygienic living conditions that were pathetic .

Dorothea Dix revolutionised mental health care in 1840s by lobbying for better living conditions for mentally ill people. In just 40years ,many psychiatric hospitals were build to take care of these mentally ill people where they were provided professional care and inpatient services and hence institutionalisation started . A new concept called moral treatment was aslo presented whose main aim was to provide respect ,dignity to the mentally ill ones.

Time moved on , by the mid1950s deinstitutionalization started where patients were treated on outpatient basis . Health care professionals belived that outpatient treatment will provide them higher quality of life where they can enjoy their freedom rather than getting treatment in confined rooms .

In 1963 ,community mental health care act came and in that it was strictly mentioned that only those patients who cause harm to others or to themselves will be involuntarily admitted in psychiatric hospitals .

There is no doubt that the development of psychiatric medication and therapeutic counseling methods facilitated the move from alsyum based mental health care. Today's mental health care is the result of long evolution of treatment of mental illness throughout the history of mankind.

Todays psychiatric hospitals create a comforting and therapeutic environment for the patients and treat the patient with compassion and by preserving their rights ,dignity . Also the family members are involved in the care including social recreational activities etc.
