What’s a bonds coupon rate and is that the same as interest rate. Why are bonds sold at premiums and discounts ?

Bond coupon rate is the same as interest rate it is the amount of interest paid at the regular interval of time .

For example if the bond face value is $100 and coupon rate is 5 % this means that you will earn $5 as interest .

Bonds are sold at discount this means that bonds are sold at a value lower than the face value of the bond if the discount rate of the bond is lower than the coupon rate then the bond is sold at discount.

Bonds are sold at a premium this means that bonds are sold at a price higher than the face value of the bond if the discount rate of the bond is higher than the coupon rate than the bond is sold at premium.
