Deductive arguments are top-down, working from general principles to specific cases. Inductive reasoning, on the other hand, is bottom-up, working from specific observations and looking for patterns that lead to a general conclusion. Your career path in healthcare and health-related fields will present many problems that will require critical reasoning. Think about potential issues or even issues you have already encountered. Determine what type of critical reasoning - inductive or deductive - best suits the situation - or do you need both? If you are short on ideas, use one of these scenarios as a starting point:

Suppose you are on a committee that has to decide whether to cut nursing staff or social services staff. How would you approach the problem?

Suppose your hospital suddenly sees an enormous increase in emergency room patients, and you are on a committee to investigate the problem and relieve pressure on the ER. How would you approach the problem?

Answer #1

Inductive reasoning and deductive reasoning, both have its own importance in the health care field. Inductive reasoning moves from specific terms to generalized conclusions while deductive reasoning is the contrast of inductive reasoning. it starts with a conclusion which is already known to us. In the health care fields, where human beings are considered as the beneficiaries or the samples, it is not always the same, every individual may have their own characteristics and the health care needs also are changing day by day. the advantage of the inductive reasoning is that it allows you to be wrong. whenever we are doing a research, mostly we use inductive reasoning. For example their are different facts about the procedure of intravascular cannula insertion. All of them may be right in some aspects. all of these ideas can be correlated and can be tested and a new protocol or procedure steps can be found. this is an example of inductive reasoning. For updating the knowledge and practice as well as to follow evidence based practices, inductive reasoning is very important. While deductive reasoning starts from top to down. For problrm solving and to follow a proper hierarchy of management, deductive reasoning is also important.
