Answer #1

The total eclipse was visible only within a narrow corridor 70 miles (110 km) wide, crossing fourteen of the contiguous United States: Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. New Jersey was none of them. That is why one needed to travel to one of the above mentioned states to see it in totality.

One of the easiest ways to safely watch a solar eclipse is to use two sheets of cardboard and make a simple pinhole projector.

The next lunar eclipse will be on July 16–17, 2019.

The next total solar eclipse will be on April 8, 2024.
