Answer #1

Reaction of Mg with HCl solution

1. Appearance of Mg: silvery-white metal in the form of ribbon.

2. Appearance of HCl: clear, slightly viscous liquid.

3. Evidence for chemical reaction:

a. Mg will dissolve in the solution, so the solution looks opaque

b. Bubbles of hydrogen gas appears

c. Heat is given off and the container will warm up, since it is an exothermic reaction.

4. Complete ionic equation:

Mg + 2 H+ + 2 Cl-\rightarrow Mg2+ + 2 Cl- + H2

5. Net ionic equation: Mg + 2 H+\rightarrow Mg2+ + H2

(Complete ionic equation contains all the ions whereas net ionic equation contains ions which undergo changes).

6. Reaction type: Single displacement reaction

(Since Mg has displaced H from HCl.)
