Pleural effusion in simple terms refers to the deposition or collection of fluid in the plural space or cavity.In lung cancer the exudates deposits in the plural cavity.The pulmonary effusion is seen mostly in non small cell carcinoma of the lungs.The squamous cell carcinoma of unknown origin can cause pulmonary effusion. It is rare and has been treated successfully but it can result in this complications .

The recent research has confirmed the chance of pulmonary effusion or pleral effusion in a patient having neuroendocrine tumor of the lungs because these neuroendocrine produces certain cells which can travel in gastrointestinal tract,liver other organs and lungs .These small cells can invade the pleral space and cause malignant pleral effusion

Adenocarcinoma of lung are found in the alveoli and makes gas exchange difficult

Oat cell carcinoma occurs due to smoking
