Degree of unsaturation of a compound is the measure of number of pi bonds or rings in a molecule. It is given as:

             

            Degree of Unsaturation         =             2C+2+N-XH 2

Where C, N, X and H represent the number of Carbon, nitrogen, halogen and hydrogen atoms respectively in one formula unit of the compound. Substituting values

          

                         Degree of Unsaturation         =           2(9)+2+1-3-8 2

                         Degree of Unsaturation         =             18+3-11 2           =   10 2

Degree of Unsaturation         =                5
