Specific gravity, also called relative density, is the ratio of the density of a substance to the density of a reference substance

the reference substance is water

so, when the specific gravity is greater than one

the density of substance is greater

and the object will Sink

when the specific gravity is less than one

the density of substance is less than water

and the object will Float
