As per Publication 17 for year 2017, an eligible educator can claim deduction of upto $250 for qualified expenses. Qualified expenses includes ordinary and necessary expenses paid in connection with books, supplies, other materials used in class room. In case of educators married and filing jointly, deduction can be claimed upto $500 ($250 for each). Eligible educator means Kindergarten through greade 12 teacher, principle, instructor, counselor or aid in school for at least 900 Hrs during the year.
In the give case, both spouse are full time teacher, teaching upto 12th therefore they are eligible educator. Hence, they can claim $500 as deduction as educator deduction on Page 1 of their form 1040 for 2017.
