Let S be the style of the car and G be the gas mileage.

According to the information given, PS = 5000 and PG = 3125

Budget constraint is given by the following equation:

PSS + PGG = 25000 => 5000S + 3125G = 25000

Simplifying we get: 8S + 5G =40

Also given that Brenda's preferences are such that she receives five much times as extra satisfaction from styling as she does from the gas mileage i.e.

MUs MUG type utility function

For an interior solution of utility maximization problem -

MUs Ps MUG PG = MRSs.G which doesn't hold true in our case. Hence we have a corner solution.

If S = 0, then G = 8 by budget constraint, U = 8

If G = 0, then S = 5 and U = 25

Thus utility is maximized at the combination (S,G) = (5,0)

Now if

Substituting in budget constraint, we get:

8S+ 5G = 40
