Answer #1

Chronic otitis media is a chronic infection occur in the middle ear which leads to hearing loss in children. The bacterial infection leads to an accumulation of fluid and causes excessive pressure in the tympanic membrane(eardrum). The pus built up can be removed through a surgical procedure called 'myringotomy'. Myringotomy is a surgical procedure in which a tiny incision is made to relieve the pus and excessive pressure in the eardrum. Myringotomy is done for the following things

  • To prevent the hearing loss in children due to an accumulation of pus in the middle ear.
  • To place the tympanostomy tubes to equalize the pressure.
  • To withdraw the fluid from the middle ear for examination of bacteria.
  • If it is not cured with medical treatment.
